[NI2130] ARCADIA, TEXAS (Galveston County). Arcadia, on State Highway 6 in northwest Galveston County, was established around 1889 near Hall's Bayou on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway and named for Arcadia, Louisiana. The townsite was laid out by Henry Rungeqv in 1890 and originally named Hall's Station. It included land for a school and a public park. Early families included the Halls, the Owenses, the Perrys, and the Dauras. The post office was founded in 1891. Several churches were organized in the 1890s, and in 1892 the White Horse Inn was built to impress prospective land buyers. The site of Arcadia was on Stephen F. Austin'sqv fourth land grant. The area had been occupied by the Coco Indians and explored by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca.qv By 1900 Arcadia had a population of 168, and in 1907 its school had eighty-nine pupils and two teachers. The town grew to 300 by 1920. Dairying became the largest industry. During the 1920s the Arcadia Creamery was founded, and the Farmer's Cooperative Feed and Grocery Store opened. In 1947 Arcadia had a post office, ten businesses, and a population of 275. By the 1980s Arcadia was within the boundaries of Santa Fe, an incorporated town. Arcadia hosted the annual county fair at Runge Park.

Hardin, Alexander Hamilton 22-Mar-1848 27-Jan-1916 New Hope 03-Feb-1916

New Hope is either the town where he died or the cemetery, it is unknown at this time.

A H Hardin Passes Away

On Thursday, Jan 27 at about 1:45 pm the death angel with his cool hands of death and laid them on the brow of our dear friend and brother Alexander Hamilton Hardin, which is a great loss to us and the community, although it is a great consolation when we think that earth's loss is heavens gain, There is a vacant place here on earth but there is a mansion filled in heaven where the savior had gone to prepare.

A H Hardin was born in Tallapoosa county Alabama March 11, 1848. When about 11 years old he moved to Union Parish La. He was married to miss Ella Cogburn December 23, 1875. He came to Texas in 1876 and has remained here since. God blessed him with 9 children only 4 of whom are now living; J D Hardin of Ft Worth, M L, Alice and Walter Hardin of this community. He left behind two brothers to mourn his loss; J H Hardin of Groesbeck and E B F Hardin of this community. Weep not loved ones for he is not dead but only sleeping, yes sleeping in Jesus, and how sweet is the sleep when one sleeps in Jesus. Sleep oh sleep sweetly sleep on dear father till the lord shall wake you. Sleep oh sleep until the great day of judgment, then we will meet ----- no more over on the other golden shore, to go home with Jesus to dwell in the Lords house with the angels.

Mr. Hardin gave his heart to Jesus at the age of 18 and has been both true and loyal to the cause. Blessed are they who die in the Lord for they shall live again.

Misfortune came to him in 1909 when he lost his wife but faith in God helped him to overcome his grief and misfortune.

He was laid to rest in the New Hope Cemetery in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives.
